License to brag

Wednesday 30 May 2012

Yep, British Columbia is not shy about provincial pride. But when you're right, you're right.

Seawall park

Tuesday 29 May 2012

Today was my first day of rehearsal for an upcoming production of Rent. (I am the assistant stage manager.) Not only do I get to be a part of this awesome show, with a great group of people and very talented performers, but the rehearsal space is within biking distance. In fact, the route is almost completely along the seawall - a pedestrian/bike path that follows the water. How perfect is this setup, huh?

So, hopefully I'll be able to get some nice shots from along this gorgeous pathway on Tuesdays and Thursdays!

Sneaky

Sunday 27 May 2012

I love that the utilities boxes here in Vancouver are so nicely camouflaged. No, not perfectly, but at a glance you don't see it, and at least it's not some giant grey box sticking out.

Ships in the sky

Saturday 26 May 2012

I was down in the Granville Island harbor today, buying some spot prawns fresh off the boat.

Sky window

Thursday 24 May 2012

Someone's basement suite window. I love that they gave us this lovely little sky scene to look at as we walk past.

Posy pots

Tuesday 22 May 2012

Back home again, with a little souvenir of the island. We bought these two little posy pots from Bev, the potter in whose backyard we were camping.

5:00 ferry

Monday 21 May 2012

On our way back to the mainland today, and unfortunately we missed the 3:00 ferry. So, we'll just have to wait for the 5:00, while sipping beer and doing crosswords on a waterfront patio. Darn.

My mug

Sunday 20 May 2012

This weekend, camping on Denman Island, we were staying in the backyard of a friend's mom, who also happens to be a potter. Since it was rainy today, she invited us into her studio to learn how to make pottery! She taught us how to use the wheel, and I made this mug. You can see that it is quite thick and rather uneven, but still, the day was a ton of fun!

Fire chains

Saturday 19 May 2012

One of the guys we were camping with, G, has recently started learning to twirl fire. He has both a staff with fire on both ends, and the fire on the ends of two chains, as seen here. How do you know you're on Vancouver Island (or thereabouts)? Yeah, this level of wonderful hippy-ness!

Denman vista

Friday 18 May 2012

We're camping on Denman Island this weekend, which is a tiny island just southeast of Comox. You can see the mountains of Vancouver Island in the background there. (I took this photo with the fancy HDR setting on my new camera, and I think it comes out a little weird.)

Sunset on the Queen of Oak Bay

Thursday 17 May 2012

We're on our way over to Vancouver Island for the Victoria day long weekend. Caught the 7:00 ferry and got a lovely sunset cruise out of it.

Holly flowers

Wednesday 16 May 2012

Those of us who grow up thinking of holly as merely plastic Christmas decorations often imagine holly to be just leaves and berries. But here is the springtime blooming holly - it actually smells quite nice.

Pole staples

Tuesday 15 May 2012

I was looking through some of my old old blog posts yesterday and thinking about how much my photography has improved since then. And then today, as I was posting this, I noticed my finger in the upper left corner there. Yep - not improving that quickly!

Mojito Monday

Monday 14 May 2012

So, our couchsurfers right now are awesome. Not only are they nice, friendly, and interesting people who brought us champagne from France, but it turns out that Yves is also a bartender. He made us all mojitos tonight, and we went up to the 27th floor to watch the sunset.

Vancouver's Arcadia

Sunday 13 May 2012

We had some couchsurfers arrive today, so we decided to take them on a picnic in Stanley park. We made some bread and salads and cut up some veggies and sausage. They brought champagne from France (they live in the region where it's made) and European chocolates. And we sat in this idyllic paradise and feasted! What an amazing dinner.

Saturday 12 May 2012

My photo for today is on Ryan's camera still. Since Ryan is at work, I cannot post it at this time. It'll be up soon, though!

Real life postcard

Wednesday 9 May 2012

An excellent view of the West End from Burrard Bridge. Our building is behind that tree in the center, so you can't quite see it. Even after a year, I have days when I just can't believe that this magical place is our neighborhood.

Evil Dead

Sunday 6 May 2012

Tonight Ryan and I went to go see Evil Dead: The Musical. We sat in the "splatter zone," got sprayed with blood as the zombies were killed, and got to go back and meet the cast afterward. They tried to eat my brains.

Shakespeare's Garden

Saturday 5 May 2012

I went on a couple of walking tours with my friend S today - one in my neighborhood, and one in Stanley Park. The walk in the park was called "The Secret History of Stanley Park," and I learned some very interesting stuff. One spot on the tour was the Shakespearean Garden, which has been planted with things that he mentioned in his plays, and looks like an idyllic English garden. Hidden in the back is this rather ridiculous-looking memorial, which I'll admit made me giggle a bit.

Slo-pitch

Wednesday 2 May 2012

Ryan has joined a slo-pitch softball league with a bunch of our friends. (I said I'd fill in if they were short, but I don't have all Wednesdays free.) Here's our lovely friend A, ready to strike out the next batter!

Rhododendrons

Tuesday 1 May 2012

I'm beginning to feel like I've been posting too many flower photos lately, but it's just such a nice spring this year.
