La vieille prison de Trois-Rivieres

Saturday 6 July 2013

I toured the old jail here in T-R today. It was full of pain and horrible stories, tiny dark cells and old chains, no plumbing and cold stone walls. The worst part, though? It was only closed in 1986.

Retired or dead

Friday 5 July 2013

There is a hallway in my school here that has the names of former professors inscribed on stones. If they are retired, there are just dates. If they are dead, there's a little cross next to the dates. I wonder - have they never had a non-Christian professor? Quebec is very Catholic, but still, it seems a bit strange.

Bird hall

Thursday 4 July 2013

The coolest part of this random stuffed bird display is that it is glass on both sides, allowing for a feathery glimpse into the classroom behind.

Ma Petite Vie

Wednesday 3 July 2013

This is my little room. It's strange being away from Ryan, but also kinda wonderful to have found a way to go back to college.

Our apartment

Tuesday 2 July 2013

Here in Trois Rivieres, I am enrolled in the Explore program, which is financed by the government of Quebec. We have to get here, but then they provide French instruction, activities, 15 meals a week, and a student apartment. It's pretty awesome.

Here is the apartment that I share with three other girls. It's basic, but nice.

Fete au Canada

Monday 1 July 2013

Okay, I don't know how to do accents on this computer yet, but Happy Canada Day!

I went downtown with some friends for Festivoix, the music festival going on right now.

Trois Rivieres

Sunday 30 June 2013

I arrived in Trois Rivieres today, and went for a walk downtown with some new friends. Here's a cute little lighthouse on the St. Lawrence River.

Riopelle

Friday 28 June 2013

As it was pouring rain all day, I thought it might be a good museum day. Unfortunately, so did everyone else.

Here is a tiny bit of a piece by an amazing Quebecois painter, Jean-Paul Riopelle.

Pierre's tomb

Thursday 27 June 2013

True to tradition, I figured that while in a new city, I should check out the graveyard. This is the Notre Dame des Neiges graveyard, and this is the French-est tomb I found. Not only is his name Pierre, he chose a French inscription and has Quebec flags planted out front.

Back with baguettes

Wednesday 26 June 2013

Well, since I'm off on an exciting trip, I thought I might start up the blog again.

I'm currently in Montreal, Quebec. I'll be in Quebec (soon in the smaller city of Trois Rivieres, and you'll have to bear with me as I haven't figured out accents on this computer yet) for six weeks, doing an intensive French immersion program. I'll be learning French as well as how to someday teach core French in elementary school.

So, for my first day, here are some baguettes!
